How Long It Takes
The number of diamonds matters more than anything else, until it doesn't: later rounds can't start until earlier games finish, so past a point extra diamonds sit empty. Times below are game time only, at 75 minutes per softball slot and two hours per baseball slot. Add your own buffer for warm-ups and delays.
| Diamonds | Time slots | Softball | Baseball |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 23 | 28 hr 45 min | 46 hr |
| 2 | 13 | 16 hr 15 min | 26 hr |
| 3 | 11 | 13 hr 45 min | 22 hr |
| 4 | 9 | 11 hr 15 min | 18 hr |
Plan Your Pitching for 9 Games
A team that loses its first game and fights back through the second-chance side can play 9 games — 7 more than a team that goes out early. On two diamonds those games land in 13 slots, so a deep run means pitching in most of them. If your tournament caps innings per pitcher per day, publish the cap in your rules before the first game, and make sure every team knows it needs more than one arm to survive the second-chance side.
The If-Necessary Game and Time Limits
Schedule the if-necessary game in its own slot at the end of the day, and tell teams up front that it might not be played. A time limit (no new inning after a set time) keeps the day on schedule; the championship and if-necessary games are the usual exceptions, played to a full game.
Seed It From Pool Play
Seeding decides who meets whom, and in a 12-team bracket it also decides which teams play the 4 play-in games. Most weekend tournaments seed the bracket from a round of pool play, so the seeds mean something. In DugoutHQ's tournament software, the bracket seeds itself from pool-play standings and advances as scores are reported, with a public bracket page teams can follow from the dugout.
FAQ
12-Team Double Elimination Questions
How many games are in a 12-team double elimination tournament?
22 games, plus an if-necessary game if the team coming out of the second-chance side wins the championship — 23 at most. Every team is guaranteed at least two games, and the rule of thumb holds: double elimination needs two games for every team, minus two (12 × 2 − 2 = 22).
How long does a 12-team double elimination tournament take?
On two diamonds it takes 13 time slots. With 75-minute softball slots that's about 16 hr 15 min of game time; with two-hour baseball slots, about 26 hr. On one diamond it takes 23 slots, and on three it takes 11, dropping to 9 on four.
How many games does each team play?
At least 2 and at most 9. The most games go to a team that loses early, wins every second-chance game, and then wins the first championship game to force the if-necessary game.
How many byes are in a 12-team bracket?
None. Instead, seeds 5–12 play 4 play-in games to fill a 8-team bracket, and seeds 1–4 wait for the winners. Because it's double elimination, losing a play-in doesn't end a team's day: it drops to the second-chance side like any other first loss.
What is the if-necessary game?
The team from the undefeated side has not lost yet, so if the second-chance team beats them in the championship, both teams have one loss and a second, deciding game is played. If the undefeated team wins the first championship game, the tournament is over and the if-necessary slot goes unused.
