How Long It Takes
The number of diamonds matters more than anything else, until it doesn't: later rounds can't start until earlier games finish, so past a point extra diamonds sit empty. Times below are game time only, at 75 minutes per softball slot and two hours per baseball slot. Add your own buffer for warm-ups and delays.
| Diamonds | Time slots | Softball | Baseball |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 14 | 17 hr 30 min | 28 hr |
| 2 | 8 | 10 hr | 16 hr |
| 3 | 6 | 7 hr 30 min | 12 hr |
| 4 | 5 | 6 hr 15 min | 10 hr |
Single or Double Elimination?
Single elimination takes 8 slots on two diamonds and sends half the field home after one game. The 15-team double elimination bracket guarantees every team 2 games and takes 16 slots. If teams paid to enter, double elimination, or a round of pool play before this bracket, is usually worth the extra time.
Seed It From Pool Play
Seeding decides who meets whom, and in a 15-team bracket it also decides which 1 teams get a first-round bye. Most weekend tournaments seed the bracket from a round of pool play, so the seeds mean something. In DugoutHQ's tournament software, the bracket seeds itself from pool-play standings and advances as scores are reported, with a public bracket page teams can follow from the dugout.
FAQ

14 games. Single elimination always needs one game fewer than the number of teams (15 − 1 = 14), because every game eliminates exactly one team.
How long does a 15-team single elimination tournament take?
On two diamonds it takes 8 time slots. With 75-minute softball slots that's about 10 hr of game time; with two-hour baseball slots, about 16 hr. On one diamond it takes 14 slots, and on three it takes 6, dropping to 5 on four.
How many games does each team play?
At least 1, and the champion plays 4. Teams with a first-round bye play one game fewer on the way to the final.
How many byes are in a 15-team bracket?
1. A single elimination bracket fills out to a power of two, so the top seed skips the first round while the other 14 teams play in.
Should a 15-team tournament be single or double elimination?
Single elimination finishes in 8 slots on two diamonds but sends 7 teams home after one game. Double elimination guarantees everyone two games and takes 16 slots on two diamonds. For a rec tournament where teams paid an entry fee, most directors choose double elimination or add pool play before a single elimination bracket.
