How Long It Takes
The number of diamonds matters more than anything else, until it doesn't: later rounds can't start until earlier games finish, so past a point extra diamonds sit empty. Times below are game time only, at 75 minutes per softball slot and two hours per baseball slot. Add your own buffer for warm-ups and delays.
| Diamonds | Time slots | Softball | Baseball |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 3 | 3 hr 45 min | 6 hr |
| 2 | 2 | 2 hr 30 min | 4 hr |
| 3 | 2 | 2 hr 30 min | 4 hr |
| 4 | 2 | 2 hr 30 min | 4 hr |
Single or Double Elimination?
Single elimination takes 2 slots on two diamonds and sends half the field home after one game. The 4-team double elimination bracket guarantees every team 2 games and takes 5 slots. If teams paid to enter, double elimination, or a round of pool play before this bracket, is usually worth the extra time.
Seed It From Pool Play
Seeding decides who meets whom, and in a 4-team bracket it also decides every first-round matchup. Most weekend tournaments seed the bracket from a round of pool play, so the seeds mean something. In DugoutHQ's tournament software, the bracket seeds itself from pool-play standings and advances as scores are reported, with a public bracket page teams can follow from the dugout.
FAQ
4-Team Single Elimination Questions
How many games are in a 4-team single elimination tournament?
3 games. Single elimination always needs one game fewer than the number of teams (4 − 1 = 3), because every game eliminates exactly one team.
How long does a 4-team single elimination tournament take?
On two diamonds it takes 2 time slots. With 75-minute softball slots that's about 2 hr 30 min of game time; with two-hour baseball slots, about 4 hr. On one diamond it takes 3 slots, and on three it takes 2 — a fourth diamond doesn’t help, because later rounds have to wait for earlier results.
How many games does each team play?
At least 1, and the champion plays 2.
How many byes are in a 4-team bracket?
None. 4 is a full bracket, so every team plays in the first round and seed 1 opens against seed 4.
Should a 4-team tournament be single or double elimination?
Single elimination finishes in 2 slots on two diamonds but sends 2 teams home after one game. Double elimination guarantees everyone two games and takes 5 slots on two diamonds. For a rec tournament where teams paid an entry fee, most directors choose double elimination or add pool play before a single elimination bracket.
