How Long It Takes
The number of diamonds matters more than anything else, until it doesn't: later rounds can't start until earlier games finish, so past a point extra diamonds sit empty. Times below are game time only, at 75 minutes per softball slot and two hours per baseball slot. Add your own buffer for warm-ups and delays.

Single or Double Elimination?
Single elimination takes 4 slots on two diamonds and sends half the field home after one game. The 8-team double elimination bracket guarantees every team 2 games and takes 9 slots. If teams paid to enter, double elimination, or a round of pool play before this bracket, is usually worth the extra time.
Seed It From Pool Play
Seeding decides who meets whom, and in a 8-team bracket it also decides every first-round matchup. Most weekend tournaments seed the bracket from a round of pool play, so the seeds mean something. On two diamonds it takes 4 time slots. With 75-minute softball slots that's about 5 hr of game time; with two-hour baseball slots, about 8 hr. On one diamond it takes 7 slots, and on three it takes 4, dropping to 3 on four.
How many games does each team play?
At least 1, and the champion plays 3.
How many byes are in a 8-team bracket?
None. 8 is a full bracket, so every team plays in the first round and seed 1 opens against seed 8.
Should a 8-team tournament be single or double elimination?
Single elimination finishes in 4 slots on two diamonds but sends 4 teams home after one game. Double elimination guarantees everyone two games and takes 9 slots on two diamonds.
