Type your batting order straight into the card and print it, or grab the blank PDF. Built for how adult baseball is actually played: a DH, a deep bench, and substitutions that get written down.

How to fill out a baseball lineup card

  1. Fill in the game details

Team, opponent, date, and whether you’re home or visitor.

  2. Write the batting order

List the nine batters in order with uniform numbers and position numbers. If you’re using a designated hitter, list the DH in the order with “DH” as the position.

  3. Add the pitcher on the DH line

With a DH, your starting pitcher doesn’t bat, so list them on the pitcher line below the order instead.

  4. List the bench

Everyone available to substitute, with numbers, so the umpire can confirm them.

  5. Make three copies

One for the plate umpire, one for the opposing manager, and one for your dugout. The umpire’s copy is the official one.

  6. Report every change

Tell the plate umpire about each substitution before it happens, and write it in the substitutes column with the inning.

How the DH line works

The designated hitter bats in place of the pitcher, who stays on the card but never comes up. Under the standard rule, the team loses the DH for the rest of the game if the DH takes a defensive position or the pitcher bats or moves to another position — the pitcher then hits in that spot. Many adult leagues play an extra hitter (EH) or bat the whole roster instead; check your league’s rules before you fill out the card.

At the plate meeting

Before the first pitch, both managers hand their cards to the plate umpire and swap copies with each other. Once the umpire accepts the cards, those lineups are official, and any later change goes through the umpire. In DugoutHQ, umpires photograph every lineup card at the plate meeting, so the league has a record if a lineup is protested later.

Tips

  • Print legibly: the umpire reads this card when someone questions who is due up.
  • Mark who can still re-enter if your league allows it, so you don’t have to work it out mid-inning.

Umpires assigned through DugoutHQ photograph every lineup card and scorebook at the plate, so the league keeps a record of every game.

FAQ

Baseball Lineup Card Questions

What is a lineup card in baseball?

The lineup card lists a team’s batting order, each player’s uniform number and defensive position, and the available substitutes. Managers exchange it with the plate umpire and the other team before the game, and it becomes the official record of who is due up.

What happens if a team bats out of order?

Nothing, unless the other team appeals. If they appeal after the wrong batter finishes the at-bat and before the next pitch, the batter who should have batted is called out and the result of the improper at-bat is cancelled. If no one appeals in time, the at-bat stands.

How many players go on a lineup card with a DH?

Ten: nine batters in the order, including the DH, plus the starting pitcher on a separate line because they don’t bat.

Can a starter re-enter the game?

Not under standard baseball rules: once a player is substituted, they’re out for the game. Many adult and senior leagues allow a starter to re-enter once; the re-entry column on this card is for leagues that do.
