Fastpitch Lineup Card with DP/FLEX

Nine batters, a FLEX in the tenth spot, and a re-entry column — the card fastpitch teams actually need, ready to type into or print blank.

Click any blank on the sheet to type in it, then print. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

How to fill out a DP/FLEX lineup card

  1. Fill in the game details

Team, opponent, date, and home or visitor.

  2. List nine batters, including the DP

Write the batting order with numbers and positions. The designated player (DP) bats in the order like anyone else; write “DP” as the position if they aren’t also fielding.

  3. Put the FLEX in the tenth spot

The FLEX plays defense but doesn’t bat, so they go on the line below the batting order with their defensive position.

  4. List the bench

    Every available substitute, with numbers.

  5. Track substitutions and re-entries

Record each change with the inning, and tick the re-entry box when a starter comes back so nobody re-enters twice.

How DP/FLEX works

The DP/FLEX rule lets a team bat nine while fielding a tenth player. The DP (designated player) is in the batting order and may also play defense. The FLEX plays defense only and is listed tenth. The DP can play defense for the FLEX, or the FLEX can bat in the DP’s spot — but they can never both be on offense, and when the FLEX bats for the DP, the DP leaves the game and the lineup becomes nine.

  • Ten players listed: nine batters, plus the FLEX in the tenth spot
  • The DP and FLEX are both starters, so both may re-enter once
  • Re-entering starters return to their original spot in the batting order
  • Exact rules vary by sanctioning body — check yours

Re-entry in fastpitch

Unlike baseball, fastpitch lets any starter leave the game and re-enter once, as long as they come back in their original spot in the batting order. The re-entry column on this card exists so nobody has to remember who has already used theirs.

Tips

  • If the FLEX bats in the DP’s spot, the DP is out of the game and your lineup drops to nine. Note it on the card straight away.
  • Rules differ between USA Softball, NFHS and NCAA. Keep your league’s rulebook handy for the edge cases.

FAQ

Fastpitch Lineup Card Questions

What does DP/FLEX mean in softball?

DP stands for designated player and FLEX for the defensive player paired with them. The DP bats; the FLEX plays defense without batting. Together they let a team field ten players while batting nine.

Does the FLEX bat?

Not normally. The FLEX can only bat by taking the DP’s spot in the batting order, and when that happens the DP is out of the game until they re-enter.

Can the DP play defense?

Yes. The DP can play defense for any player, including the FLEX. If the DP replaces the FLEX on defense, the FLEX leaves the game and the lineup drops to nine.

How many players are on a DP/FLEX lineup card?

Ten starters: nine in the batting order, including the DP, and the FLEX listed tenth. Substitutes go in the bench section.

Can starters re-enter in fastpitch softball?

Yes, once. A starter who is substituted may re-enter one time, and must return to their original spot in the batting order.
