How to run player evaluations for a draft
Agree on the scale first
Every evaluator uses the same 1–5 scale, with 3 meaning a solid league-average player.
Run the same drills for everyone
Batting practice, ground balls, fly balls, a throw from short, and a timed run to first.
Rate each skill, not the person
Score each category separately, then give an overall rating that reflects how they’d help a team.
Average the evaluators
Combine everyone’s sheets so one evaluator’s favorite doesn’t decide the draft.
Draft by tier
Group players by overall rating and draft within tiers to keep teams balanced.
Built for adult league drafts
Most adult rec leagues balance teams with a draft of free agents. This sheet keeps a full evaluation session on one page so captains compare players on the same scale. On DugoutHQ, free agents register with their own skill level and preferred positions, and convenors can place them on teams or run a draft from the dashboard.
Tips
- Note positions players can actually play — the draft needs catchers and pitchers, not nine shortstops.
Free agents register with their skill level and positions, ready for you to place on teams or draft.

Player Evaluation Form Questions
What skills should a softball evaluation cover?
Hitting for contact, hitting for power, fielding, arm strength and accuracy, speed, and pitching if the player pitches. An overall rating and notes on positions round it out.
How do you keep player ratings fair?
Use the same drills and the same 1–5 scale for every player, have at least two evaluators, and average their sheets.
